Florida Diving Sites With A Difference

January 4th, 2010 by glefleur

Many scuba divers travel to Florida diving simply because there are plenty of scuba dive sites found around the coast of Florida.

Although Florida is known as the “sunshine state” not many people understand that Florida has more coastal waters than any other US state.

Take the Atlantic coast for instance. The Atlantic coast has some of the best natural and artificial reefs along the length of its coastline starting with West Palm Beach up towards the north east down to Key West at the most southern point.

Another unique highlight along the Atlantic coastline is the current provided by The Gulf Stream which moves up north along the coastline before sweeping out east and into the Atlantic.

The Gulf Stream provides a cleansing action for the reef system and brings with it nutrients which provides essential food for the growing marine system.

Many travelling to Florida diving for the first time are astonished at the range and diversity of dive sites available.

Top Rated Florida Diving Destinations – Jupiter to Miami

Jupiter and West Palm Beach will amaze you with their fascinating shipwrecks and some scuba dive sites have more than one wreck. The Thozina is one of a trio of wrecks sunk at an artificial reef called Governor’s River Walk Reef and is meant for experienced divers.

Inexperienced Florida diving enthusiasts will find a diversity of gorgeous reefs in West Palm Beach. Reefs such as Breakers Reef covered in marine life.

Driving south towards Miami you reach Ft. Laud. America’s answer to Venice, this is a scenic place providing a great base for any Florida diving trip.

Apart from the canals and waterways Ft. Laud offers unusual diving opportunities such as Tenneco Towers or Oil Platforms. Venture further south and you arrive at Miami.

Only in Miami would you scuba dive to unearth Army Tanks!

Miami is a terrific place to visit on a Florida diving break with areas like South Beach with its Art Deco and the many Miami attractions. There is also a vast choice of diving sites due to the ongoing artificial reef program.

Top Rated Florida Diving Destinations – Key Largo to Key West
Of course no Florida diving trip can be taken without considering a visit to Key Largo or Key West, The Keys.

When you see the vast choice of dive sites available it’s easy to see why Key Largo is one of the most popular diving destinations in the world.

Any Florida diving trip to Key Largo has to include a dive or snorkeling trip to Christ of the Abyss, one the most well-known underwater statues in the world. Sunk in fairly shallow waters this statue is one of the most visited and photographed statues anywhere.

When it comes to underwater photography or macro photography Molasses Reef provides an interesting opportunity to practice your underwater skills with the shallow waters and spectacular marine life providing the fantastic colors and lighting.

Key Largo is the best known by the Florida diving community for its wide range of diving sites but Key West is the location to go for the nightlife and culture if you do travel to The Keys.

Many scuba divers prefer the complete package, fun in the water and out, and Key West provides both. Great scuba dive sites and streets full of entertainment means the place is bouncing in the night so you can enjoy yourself 24 hours a day.

So far we have had a very concise look at the Atlantic coast and have not even begun looking on the west coast, The Gulf of Mexico, but that is for another day.
