African-born people in Europe
March 17th, 2010 by cdrotsky@wsiprowebprojects.comThe formation of the African Diaspora in Europe began effectively in the 1960’s when most of the African nations got independence from their European rulers and the people were given greater access to education, travel and settling into the former colonial countries. Many black Africans fled their countries for better life in Europe escaping from local ethnical and political conflicts, famine etc. The largest populations of Africans in Europe are in France, the UK and the Netherlands. In the late 20th century, there was significant increase of the African diasporans in the Scandinavian countries and Italy. The majority of the immigrants though are illegal, meaning also that they are not accounted for. Nevertheless, the majority of the African migrants live in Europe – estimated 4.6 million, compared to about 900,000 in the US. More on the African Diaspora in Europe on the Africa Meet site.
