Chinese Food Delivery
I’ve been looking for a good Chinese takeout or delivery place in my neighborhood for a while without much luck. My parents used to get Chinese food delivery all the time from a local outfit called the Peking Palace when I was growing up, but in the last couple of years, they have really gone downhill. The food went from flavorful and light to greasy and flavorless, so about a year ago we stopped getting it anymore. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants fairly nearby, but all of them are either too far to get the food delivered or don’t offer delivery service at all.
At one point, I experimented with cooking my own Chinese recipes. I had never really tried another culture’s traditional food, And the idea sounded fun to me. I tried cooking something that I thought would be easy: pork fried rice. I used to have a roommate who cooked authentic Chinese food all the time in college, so I called her up to get her recipe for fried rice. She gave me the recipe and it sounded simple enough, so I tried to cook it instead of looking for a new Chinese food delivery restaurant.
The results were okay, but it wasn’t really that good. Thinking back on college, I realize that my housemate’s Chinese cooking had never been that flavorful; I had liked it because I had doused it all in hot sauce and because it had been plentiful and free. My attempts were similarly bland, and I realized that I would need to find new, fresher spices and a better recipe if I really wanted to make good fried rice. It suddenly all seemed like too much work.

I happened to be going over to a friend’s house the next day to watch some movies. He had leftover Chinese takeout and offered me some. Although it had been sitting in his fridge for a couple of days and had been through the microwave, the food was surprisingly good. It was so good, in fact, that I asked him where it was from. When he told me that it was Chinese food delivery from Peking Palace, I was shocked. Apparently, their food had gotten better since I last went there. According to my friend, they were now under new management and had even received a “Best Chinese Restaurant” honor in the local weekly. It just goes to show you to never give up on a neighborhood restaurant forever. Even the most greasy, bland Chinese food delivery joint can improve with new ownership.
