Model Trains Sets
January 12th, 2010 by ljr3233One of the best past times for families over the years has been model trains sets. Model railroading can provide hours of fun and enjoyment for all the family members. The best way to get started is with a ready to run train set out of the box.
These ready to go train sets are very affordable and are manufactured using high quality materials. These model sets will provide hours of entertainment for all. Today’s model trains sets come with everything needed to get started with train parts right out of the box. Most of these sets come with the locomotive, track, train cars, and power source (transformer).
The trains sets track pieces usually go together very easily and allows the train to run on any table, floor, or some carpet surfaces.
These train sets come in different scale sizes such as HO scale, O-scale, O-27 scale, and G-scale. The O-scale and O-27 scale are basically the same size and have evolved in the last 100 years to be small enough for those little hands but big enough to stay on the track. You will discover that the HO scale trains are usually to small and delicate for young children and difficult for them to align the cars on the tracks. The O-scale trains have proven to be the best for small spaces. In fact the most advanced layouts will fit in an area about the size of a household door.
Most trains sets include some or all of the following items: locomotives or engine, cars, track, transformer, and couplers.
LOCOMOTIVES or engines are designed to pull the train. Today’s model trains sets come with either a modern diesel locomotive or an old-time steam engine. Most have a working headlight. Some of the steam locomotives will expel puffs of smoke out the top of the engine. Some locomotives even provide an air whistle sound.
TRACK sets come with straight and curved track pieces to build an oval . Some of the expensive sets come with special pieces called a switch that allows the train to switch to another track. Many trains sets include a rerailer track that helps with aligning the wheels of the cars and locomotive on the track. Most track systems snap-together easily. Matching sections of track are sold separately for enlarging the basic oval.
COUPLERS are on the ends of the cars and locomotives are used to keep the train cars locked together. All you have to do is push the cars together and the couplers connect the cars together. Most train sets cars have a knuckle-shaped couplers that resemble clasped hands for a secure connection.
POWER PACKS (electrically powered controllers) provide you with the control to change the speed of the engine. The power pack allow you to slow the train down or even stop the locomotive. You can also make the train to run in the forward or backward direction. Most of the power packs have two sets of connections. One set that provides power to the locomotive, the other set provides electrical power for the accessories. Most of these power packs include a built-in protective device that will shut the power pack off when there is an electrical problem. All the power packs must be plugged into a wall socket. Instructions are included with all model trains sets for operating the power pack.
