My husband and I came up with a solution to the dilemma. We had a few options that I will share in case you are torn between creating an angel Christmas tree and using your personalized ornaments as well. These are simple and you may find that you really like the idea of showcasing your sentimental decorations separately from the angel theme tree.

Thinking About Table Decorations for the Christmas Season?

December 6th, 2008 by author

..Perhaps you’re in the mood for a wintery look. Simple. With table decoration you can just use white, blue, light shades of purple and you’re on your way. Along with candles you can add ornamental snowflakes, little snowmen, or strands of clear beads or snowy white garlands.

If you have a color scheme in your home that you would like to play off of, then that can make it even simpler. You can always find candles, ribbons, napkins, beads, etc. online or at the store. Add touches of winter greenery or tiny Christmas trees to solidify the look.

Balloon Arches

November 27th, 2008 by author

Balloon arches are the right decorations to add a tinge of very festive air to a celebration without breaking the bank. Balloon arches have a great aesthetic effect for weddings, birthday parties, special anniversaries and all sorts of other events that require festive decorating. The balloons are arranged on a framework so as to create a pattern; you have to choose the color and the alternation of motifs in the design of the arch. The beauty is that you can get balloon arches ready made by special design companies or event planners; or you can make the framework yourself and attach the balloons if you’d rather go for the do-it-yourself option.

Brain Teaser Puzzles

November 27th, 2008 by author

A common denominator for all puzzles is that they challenge us. A jigsaw puzzle is a challenge to your ability to see patterns and recognize matches. It is a physical challenge to match up pieces and somewhat of a mental challenge to make a lot of random segments make a whole. There is something tremendously satisfying about solving simple puzzle or even just one piece of a jigsaw puzzle that is all the reward you need for taking up the pastime. In that way, puzzles are very relaxing because whether its filling in a word on a crossword, finding a word on a word search or putting one of 300 pieces together on a jigsaw, that satisfaction is what recreation is all about.

Crocheting A Baby’s First Christmas Stocking

November 25th, 2008 by author

Most of these moms will crochet a blue or pink baby’s first Christmas stocking for the special commemorative holiday. The colors do not have to be pastel, either. You can choose different shades that reflect the holiday season as well. I would love to be one of those moms but I have trouble tying my shoes let alone crocheting a baby’s first Christmas stocking. Some of us may have the good intentions but we are really doing everyone a big favor if we buy the finished product outright. I found lovely baby’s first Christmas stockings online. Music is very important in my home and I was thrilled to find musical Christmas stockings that can be used as keepsakes for the special holiday.

Making Crafts For Kids Safe

November 20th, 2008 by author

When the days turn dark early, the air turns cold, and the snow starts to fall, I always pull out winter crafts for kids to keep them occupied. A lot of parents out there neglect kids crafts, figuring that they get enough of that in the schools. They might get craft supplies for their kids and allow them to do work on their own, but many adults believe that their dignity is above working on artistic projects themselves.
Crafts and hobbies are not only fun, but they are a great way to bring families together. They encourage creativity, and they allow kids to try out new things. It is not enough to allow your children to use crafts for kids themselves. Getting the best crafts for kids is mostly a matter of trial and error. Obviously, some of it depends on age, but some of it also depends on the kids individual temperaments. Some kids crafts work well for everyone at a certain age. For example, young children all love to glue glitter to paper. At a certain age, all girls and some boys love to make friendship bracelets.

Sending Wedding Announcements

November 19th, 2008 by author

I had assumed that we would get our wedding invitations and announcements printed by a professional stationery store. I actually had a contact in the business, a man who had been printing wedding invitations and announcement cards for years and was very good at what he did. He offered to give us discount wedding invites because of his friendship with me, but my wife would have none of it. Although she did not directly insult him over his offer for sending wedding announcements, she was rather brusque. Apparently, she had her own ideas, and she did not appreciate me butting in.

Beatles Sheet Music

November 16th, 2008 by author

Anything associated with The Beatles is bound to be in demand. For musicians, the chance to own Beatles sheet music is inspiring. Unfortunately, the originals are beyond most people’s budgets! However, there are plenty of books containing reproductions, helping to recreate all the hits for the budding guitarist at a party or the more serious aspirations of a tribute band.Beginners that want an easy level will enjoy The Beatles: Complete Easy Guitar Edition, a large collection of 176 songs with simplified arrangements. Melody lines, chords and chord boxes, and lyrics are accompanied by color photographs and illustrations. More easy level Beatles sheet music is contained in Really Easy Guitar! The Beatles. The book has guitar tab, chord boxes and lyrics and a soundtrack CD. There are tips on how to play different aspects of the tunes and a helpful guide on using tab and chords for beginners.

Craft Videos Online Help You Out

November 13th, 2008 by author

It’s always good to be shown how to make something, and crafts are no different, so the latest trend of having craft videos online makes so much sense. You can see how others perform each stage of a craft, and it’s much better than trying to follow written instructions.

Craft videos also give you some great ideas for hobbies to try with your children on those wet rainy days, or during those long summer holidays. They are a great source of ideas for gifts for birthdays, anniversaries or Christmas, and with them you can perhaps spend a little less, while still giving a thoughtful gift.

To be honest, I really cannot think of a negative to having craft videos online. If there is one, it is perhaps that bookstores may not sell as many craft books.

Paper for the Scrapbook

November 1st, 2008 by author

Making a scrapbook is an art. This is because it takes more than just photos and newspaper clippings to express the personality of the person. If none of these are present, then it’s just an album.

One of the most important things that the scrapbook needs is paper. This can be made of different material so you can stick photos or clippings and also a good background to match the layout on each page.

The paper used for scrapbooks are acid and lignin free. This means this they can accept writing using pens, chalk, pastel and crayon. This is also used for other things such as the background for picture framing.

Where can you get them? The best place which has more than just paper and pens is the bookstore. These are often sold in packs that may come in different designs and colors. Another good source is the internet, this is because of the increasing popularity of making scrapbooks that has prompted people to sell some of these items inexpensively online.

Scrapbook paper is not only available in plain prints. There are also some designs available that have floral and striped prints. There are also seasonal designs that are launched in the summer or in the winter which may depict special events in a given year.

Coins Values

October 25th, 2008 by author

Most coins values are easy to find if you know where to look. It really depends on what you are collecting. Some like to collect buffalo nickels, though the coins values for each of them vary. Some of the information on the most valued of these can be found online, and some sites are very current with pricing and letting you know how hard something is to find. The most common coins are not as valuable of course, but they may still hold some value in the long run.

How To Make Handicraft Gifts

October 9th, 2008 by author

If you are looking for a handicraft gift idea to make for someone special, perhaps that person would like an apron.  When we think of aprons, we often think of mothers and grandmothers in the kitchen, but men can often benefit from having an apron as well.  They often enjoy barbecuing, for one thing.  They also can use an apron in the workshop.  Children, too, can use an apron for many of their activities, such as arts and crafts.    Here are simple instructions for making a handicraft gift of an apron that can be adapted for anyone.

Start with a piece of sturdy fabric suitable for the individual for whom you are making the handicraft gift.  The fabric needs to be wide enough to wrap 1/2 to 3/4 of the way around them and long enough to cover them from collar bone to just above the knee.  For a large adult, 25 to 30 inches wide by 36 to 40 inches long should be about right.  A slimmer adult can use a narrower apron, but if they will be wiping their hands on the sides of it, they might appreciate the extra width.  An apron for a child of 10 could start with a piece of fabric about 18 inches wide by 25-30 inches long.

The best types of fabric to use are sturdy cottons, such as medium weight denim or twill.  Soft cottons such as broadcloth or muslin are all right in the kitchen, but will not last long, and would not hold up in the garden or workshop at all.  Other materials you’ll need are thread and a sewing machine.  You will also need enough extra fabric to make a strap to go around the neck, ties for the back, and pockets.

consider a wine gift basket

October 7th, 2008 by author

With the holidays coming, consider a wine gift basket for a perfect hostess gift!

Just as we’re getting back into the school year routine, leaving summer and vacations behind, the onset of fall and crisp nights signal Halloween and costumes, the now-official beginning of the holiday season. While the kids are reaching the bottom of the trick or treat basket, we’re thinking about Thanksgiving and the holidays. It’s time to eat, drink and be merry, from Thanksgiving right on through to New Year’s. When we attend parties during this festive season, tradition requires guests bring a small hostess gift to show their pleasure at being invited. With all we have to do during this busy time of year, a simple hostess gift may leave us stumped for ideas. A wine gift basket is a simple and thoughtful gift that doesn’t take much time to put together.

Vintners and wine merchants are well prepared for the holiday season, knowing that Americans are becoming more familiar with the fine wine market. You’ll find shops both locally and online, with lovely ready made wine gift baskets, bedecked and beribboned to a state of finery which will pass the most persnickety of party hosts’ scrutiny.

Best Selling Antique Toys

September 26th, 2008 by author

Whipping tops are said to have come from the Far East and Native American tribes played with them in the frozen north on the ice. They became very fashionable in Victorian England and the craze was exported back to America, an example of antique toys going in a circle. And not surprisingly, ball and bat games have been played since time immemorial in one form or another, leading to the eventual modern pastimes of baseball, soccer, cricket and rounders. Naturally the early balls were made from cloth or wood, before the processing of rubber. Knurr and Spell was one of the best selling antique toys, a ball and bat set that used a hard ball and a bat made from native pine.

Making Crafts For Children Safer

September 26th, 2008 by author

Of course, not every craft for children can be done without adult supervision. A lot of them involve potentially dangerous or harmful products. That is why it is important to give kids art projects that can be done on their own. As all kids like make-believe, they also need private time to digest their own thoughts. Something as simple as a coloring book can open up a whole new world to kids. Better yet, get them some clay and sculpting tools. When you are designing crafts for children, keep in mind that kids don’t necessarily have fine motor skills developed at an early age. You can help them along by allowing them to work with more hands-on materials.

Use Your Imagination For Creative Halloween Costumes

September 20th, 2008 by author

A good beginning to truly creative Halloween costumes takes you to a local costume shop. Take a look at the lineup. See what’s most popular and vow to do something else. Portraits Artists

August 24th, 2008 by author

Portrait art used to be one of the biggest tests of an artist’s abilities. Basically, all artists were portrait artists. A portrait artist would have to make pictures of his patron in order to secure continued support. This could be a challenging situation, because the portraits had to be both realistic and flattering.

The artist portrait will be judged as a work of art, but it would also be judged as a commentary on his patron. Too much realism in the portrait of a patron who had not been treated well by the years could result in an unemployed, banished, or even executed artist in some cases.

Tips On Choosing A Hobby

July 24th, 2008 by author

Unfortunately, many people don’t have the first idea how to choose a hobby. In fact, many adults have never bothered to choose a hobby. They may have had something that they enjoyed as a kid such as painting, playing an instrument, building models, or writing, but they put it away in favor of more serious pursuits as they got older. This is one of the most common and one of the most tragic mistakes that adults make in our culture. Americans are extremely hard-working and career driven people, and often neglect those crucial activities that make life worth living. Having something that you really enjoy to do as a way to unwind after work is as necessary as having a warm house and a comfortable bed.

Valetine Flowers

July 19th, 2008 by author

As many of us know Valentine?s Day is considered as a special day for lovers. On this day lovers usually give various gifts to express their feelings. The most well known gifts for Valentine?s Day includes chocolates and flowers. While roses are thought of as being one of the Valentine flowers there are others that you can choose.

The other Valentine flowers include carnations, iris, tulips, lilies, daffodils and even daisies. The reason why some people will choose carnations to give as Valentine flowers is because of their rich, heady and spicy scent. The smell of cloves and the many dainty petals of the carnation all seem to convey the idea that these beautiful flowers are ideal to have as a symbol of love.

The Iris is also chosen as one of the many Valentine flowers. Its long stems open to show graceful and colorful flowers.

Flower Shops

July 15th, 2008 by author

When we need to buy flowers for various occasions or situations we tend to see what we can buy from flower shops. These flower shops can be your friendly neighborhood flower shop or one of the larger impersonal flower shops. These different shops will all have the same function and that is to sell you fresh flowers.

In the past you could tell the difference between small flower shop and the larger flower shops from the types of flowers that were sold. Some of the large flower shops would have exotic flowers and flower arrangements mixed in with some of the more expensive flowers varieties.

These shops would stock flowers like Lobster Claws, Ostrich Ginger Plume flowers, Monkey?s tails with different varieties of waxy orchids, roses like the black rose, and other rose hybrids. You could also buy some of the other normal flowers but these too had the look of being expensive.

The smaller flower shops on the other hand would be able to sell you different varieties of roses ? in one solid color ? small moss roses, gladioli, bunches of daises, tulips, daffodils and others. Today this whole scene has changed and you can find all of these flower shops carrying an impressive array of flowers.

These flower shops both the small and the large now cater to what their customers want. So you will see vases filled with masses of long stemmed red roses next to ceramic pots of Lobster Claws mixed with Baby?s Breath and Iris flowers.

Some people are obsessed with fonts, spending hours and hours trying to find the perfect layout and appearance for a text. Other people stress out over their handwriting, trying to get their script just perfect to create the most beautiful letters they can. Creative Container Gardens

May 21st, 2008 by author

For example, a small balcony may look best with equal sized pots. If you have the space, oak half barrels hold a big display and make an attractive statement. On the other hand, an entry with wide steps leading up to a porch looks good with several different sizes of pots. A few large pots, with smaller pots of individual plants nestled up to the large ones creates a cascading effect with lots of impact. The first step in designing a container garden is choosing the arrangement and sizes of your pots.
You’d be amazed at the latitude you have in containers. Some gardeners use an old clawfoot bathtub to plant a whimsical container garden that looks great at a country style home. Large antique watering cans make a nostalgic container that is lovely outside the kitchen door. Think creative!

Now that you’ve got your pots in a row, you’ll want to prepare them for their occupants.

Scrapbooking in the UK

April 29th, 2008 by author

Hello to all my fellow Scrappers in the UK!

How is your scrapbooking going?

I’ve only been scrapbooking for a few months (officially) but it’s something I’ve done ever since my childhood. (I’m now 44) I just didn’t realise that it’d become so high profile a hobby.

Here I’ve been quietly collecting memorabilia and photos over the years, not realising that I’m part of a ‘Scrappers’ fraternity out there.

From saving favourite birthday & Christmas cards, tickets to theatre trips & days outings to the much loved ‘Starsky & Hutch’ scrapbook from my teens.

I’ve since done numerous scrapbooks relating to holidays and special occasions. My favourite & ongoing one is my Son’s (hoped rise to fame) scrapbook. He’s wanted to be an Actor from the age of 4, he’s 20 now & in his 2nd year of University doing a Drama degree. I’ve scrap booked everything he’s ever had a part in from primary school shows to his Major Final Performance that he did in order to get his BTEC diploma, before going to Uni.

Decorating With Large Seashells

April 28th, 2008 by author

The powder room is a great place to have one of these. If you use one in a guest bathroom you can fill it with brightly colored, wrapped guest soaps. Your guests will love the look of the large seashell and will also like having their own selection of soaps.

A foyer can often be something of a mundane space. No one stands there very long yet you want it to be bright and cheery. Having seashells on tables by the door is a great idea. You can fill them with colored pebbles or even clear marbles. They make a terrific conversation piece because they are so unique. If you find some seashells while you are away on vacation this is a great way to put them to use.

Homemade Gifts
