Getting The Skills To Write Fiction

February 24th, 2010 by craigkant

If you want to write fiction well, you have to start to notice the people around you, wherever they are. Watch them at the train station, bus stop, stadiums.

Notice what they’re wearing, their speech patterns, their mannerisms, and so forth. Television is not a good place to observe people because the cameras rarely remain on a person long enough to be useful. Become practiced at observing people and their behavior and your novel characters will start to come alive.

Writing a fiction book is basically convincing a pool of readers that characters who never existed, actually do exist, and that events that never happened, could have very plausibly happened. To do this, you have to make the people seem real. Their situations have to seem real. The only way that you can write like this is to take note of how people in the real world actually talk and the things that are important to them.
